Go Where Your Heart Leads is the most famous novel by Italian writer Susanna Tamaro. It is written as a long confession of eighty-year-old Olga, who feels that her life is coming to an end after an illness. While her granddaughter Marta is on a trip to America, Olga writes her a series of letters in which she honestly speaks for the first time about her past and the secrets she has hidden for decades.

Through memories, we learn about Olga's childhood marked by cold family relations, her unhappy marriage to Augusta, and her fateful meeting with Ernesto, the man she truly loved. From this relationship, her daughter Ilaria was born, but Olga never openly admitted this truth. It was this single lie, as she herself says, that determined the destinies of several people and created a series of misunderstandings that will stretch across generations.

A particularly important part of the novel is the relationship between Olga and her daughter Ilaria. Olga, burdened by her own frustrations and societal expectations, often fails to understand her daughter, which leads to estrangement and lasting wounds. After Ilaria's untimely death, Olga takes over the care of her granddaughter Marta, but over time, an emotional distance develops between them. The letters she writes are her last attempt to explain to her granddaughter who she really was and why she made decisions that hurt the people she loved.

The novel follows three generations of women – Olga, Ilaria and Marta – and explores the legacy of family secrets, guilt, love and missed opportunities. Instead of external action, the focus is on memories, emotions and the process of self-understanding. Olga gradually comes to the realization that her biggest mistake was living according to the expectations of others, and not according to her own feelings. That is why the title message, addressed to her granddaughter, becomes life advice: have the courage to follow your heart, even when the path is uncertain.
