Betty Zane

Betty Zane

Zane Grey

Zane Grey's debut novel. Based on a family legend, this historical novel tells the suspenseful story of the brave girl Betty Zane and the heroes who defend the American frontier during the Revolutionary War.

"Betty Zane" is the debut novel by Zane Grey, published in 1903, which launched the prolific career of this great adventure writer. Unlike his later classic Westerns, this is a historical adventure novel based on true events and family lore about the author's great-aunt, a fearsome and courageous heroine of the American Revolutionary War. The story is set on the dangerous western frontier of Virginia in the late 18th century, at Fort Henry. The story follows the young life of Betty Zane, a girl of bright spirit, exceptional courage and unbreakable will, who, growing up in a harsh wilderness environment, learns how to survive constant threats and conflicts. Through a tense and emotional plot, Grey describes the daily struggles of the settlers, their complex relationships with native tribes, and the political tensions of the time. The climax of the novel depicts the dramatic siege of Fort Henry, in which Betty performs a historic, heroic act: she runs across the clearing under enemy fire to bring the defenders much-needed gunpowder and thus save the fort from certain destruction. Written with great passion, vivid descriptions of untouched nature and a deep respect for the pioneer spirit, Betty Zane is a timeless story of loyalty, patriotism, love and unwavering human courage.
