Zemlja je socijalni roman objavljen 1887. godine, dio ciklusa "Rougon-Macquart", u kojem Zola prikazuje brutalnu stvarnost života francuskih seljaka.
Radnja je smještena u selu Beauce, gdje su zemlja i vlasništvo nad njom glavne životne sile koje pokreću likove. Glavni lik, Jean Macquart, bivši vojnik, doseljava se u selo i počinje raditi kao nadničar. Zaljubljuje se u Françoise, vrijednu i poštenu djevojku koja pokušava zaštititi svoje nasljedstvo od pohlepe svoje obitelji. Françoisina sestra Lise, udana za seljaka Buteaua, i njen muž spremni su na sve – uključujući nasilje i zločin – da bi zadržali što više zemlje.
Središnja tema romana je dehumanizacija uzrokovana pohlepom za zemljom. Seljaci su prikazani kao brutalni, sebični i beskrupulozni, spremni žrtvovati obiteljske veze i osnovne ljudske vrijednosti. U tom surovom svijetu, zemlja nije samo sredstvo opstanka, već i predmet žudnje i sukoba.
Zola realistički i naturalistički prikazuje težak, često okrutan život na selu, odbacujući romantične predodžbe o idiličnom ruralnom životu. "Zemlja" je šokirala suvremene čitatelje zbog sirovosti prikaza, ali danas se smatra jednim od vrhunskih ostvarenja naturalističke književnosti.
