Judith Morgan is an army nurse who volunteered for duty at an evacuation hospital in the Algerian desert during World War II.
The story provides vivid descriptions of the long, desperate days of the North African campaign and its endless stream of casualties. Judith volunteers to serve in a combat zone while dealing with a double tragedy, the death of her pilot fiancé and her brother. Eventually, she develops a new love, a colleague, Captain Christie.
