Don Juan / Prevratnik
This collection of short prose sketches and impressions offers lucid descriptions of everyday life in Vienna, exploring male-female relationships, social masks, and the provocative figures of Don Juan and the rebel.
The collection Don Juan / The Subversive is a representative selection from Peter Altenberg’s first published book, As I See It (Wie ich es sehe, 1896)—a work that established him as a central figure of Viennese Modernism and the city’s café culture at the end of the 19th century. In his short prose miniatures, aphorisms, and sketches, Altenberg masterfully captures fleeting moments, moods, and the subtle details of everyday urban life. Through the motif of Don Juan and the figure of the "subversive" (or rebel), the author deconstructs traditional notions of seduction, passion, conventional morality, and social roles. His characters and observations are imbued with a delicate irony, melancholy, and an exceptional psychological sensitivity. Rather than crafting classical stories with elaborate plots, Altenberg employs a few precise sentences—linguistic "brushstrokes"—to lay bare human nature, the dynamics between men and women, and the hidden desires of fin-de-siècle Viennese society. This collection offers insight into the origins of impressionistic prose and showcases a distinctive literary style that exerted a profound influence on Austrian literature.
