The train stopped at a way station and the girl's mother went out on the platform to make a phone call, but she did not notice that the train had started. Train staff were warned to keep an eye out for the child who remained asleep, but when the train pulled into Stockholm Central Station the girl was gone, and despite dozens of potential witnesses, no one saw what happened. Inspector Alex Recht and his team, joined by criminal Fredrika Bergman, were assigned to solve the case, which at first appeared to be a typical example of a custody battle between separated parents. But when they find the corpse of a child with the word "unwanted" written on its forehead in the north of Sweden, the case soon turns into a nightmare for the investigative team - the pursuit of a diabolically intelligent and cruel killer.
