Roman predstavlja autobiografski prikaz autorovih iskustava tijekom Domovinskog rata. Knjiga obuhvaća razdoblje od kolovoza 1992. do rujna 1993. godine, tijekom kojeg je Cvetnić sudjelovao na južnom bojištu, posebno u području Dubrovnika.

Djelo je spoj ratnog dnevnika, eseja i proze, prožeto humorom, ironijom i distancom, što ga razlikuje od patetičnih i herojskih prikaza rata. Cvetnić prikazuje apsurde vojne hijerarhije, nesnalaženje institucija i pojedinaca te unutarnju borbu pojedinca suočenog s ratnim užasima. U fokusu nije epska borba, već čovjek koji, u kaosu, pokušava sačuvati dostojanstvo i razum.

Roman je postao iznimno važan u kontekstu hrvatske ratne književnosti jer tematizira rat bez glorifikacije, iz pozicije skeptičnog, obrazovanog promatrača. Osvojio je nagradu Ksaver Šandor Gjalski te ostao prepoznat kao jedno od najznačajnijih proznih ostvarenja hrvatske književnosti 1990-ih.
