In Bucharest, American Dean Albert Corde is accompanied by his wife, of Romanian origin, whose mother, a famous scientist, is seriously ill.
The trip is an opportunity for the dean to think objectively, because as a foreigner accustomed to a different order of things, he has no other choice. The dean's newspaper articles about Chicago have provoked unfavorable reactions because he has described the gloomy, depressing aspects of life in the big city without mincing words. This has also caused a frown from his superiors. Is he at a crossroads, will he be forced to resign?
