Viktor Ivančić

Robi's Notebook by K. Viktor Ivančić is a satirical book written in the form of a diary of an eight-year-old boy, Robi, through whose seemingly naive perspective the social and political absurdities of Croatia in the early 1990s are revealed.

In his notebook, Robi describes school, family, media, Church and “patriotic” authorities, but the childish logic and literal understanding of adult statements produce a strong satirical effect. It is through this contrast between childish innocence and brutal reality that Ivančić exposes the hypocrisy of the political elite, manipulation of patriotism, revisionism, intolerance towards “others” and the pressure of collective opinion. Robi’s notes often sound like caricatures, but they stem from real statements and phenomena, which further enhances their critical sharpness.

The book relies on humor, irony and the grotesque, but beneath the comic tone it carries a serious accusation of a society that indoctrinates children, normalizes violence and stifles freedom of thought. Robi K.’s notebook is at the same time a document of the times and a universal criticism of every system that hides behind “higher goals”. Due to its provocativeness and uncompromising satire, the book has caused numerous controversies, but has become one of the key works of contemporary Croatian political satire.

The first edition from 1994 was created in a war and post-war context, marked by nationalism, authoritarianism, militarization of everyday life, and strong ideological control of public space.
