Poslanje žene: Putovi i zadaci feminizma

Paul Tournier

Paul Tournier's book The Mission of Woman presents the Swiss physician, theologian, and pioneer of "personal medicine"'s reflections on the role and mission of women in the contemporary world, from a Christian and psychological perspective.

Tournier starts from the diagnosis that Western civilization is predominantly male – rational, technical, aggressive, focused on power, productivity and external success. This masculinity, according to him, has led to an imbalance: alienation from feelings, relationships, intimacy and spirituality. For centuries, women have been relegated to the private sphere of the home, excluded from public life and culture, which has created a sharp contrast between male "magnificence" and female "intimacy".

Feminism sees women's struggle for equality and a way out of this limitation as justified. However, he warns that the path to emancipation can be a double-edged sword: if a woman only imitates the male model (competition, career at all costs, suppression of sensitivity), she loses her specific value and contributes to an even greater imbalance in civilization. Instead, women have a special mission – to bring back to the world what is missing: sensitivity, compassion, the ability to relate, caring for the person, a spiritual dimension and a love that heals.

Tournier does not advocate a return to the old subordination, but rather the complementarity of the masculine and the feminine. A woman should participate in all spheres of life, but carrying with her her unique gift – to be the "gift of feeling" (which is the title of the English translation of The Gift of Feeling). She can save civilization from coldness and destruction if she remains true to her essence, and not if she simply adapts to the male pattern.

The book combines biblical motifs, psychological observations from practice, and personal reflections, calling for gender balance as a path to a more complete humanity. It is still read today as a subtle critique of radical feminism and confirmation of the value of female specificity in God's plan.
