Kalifornische Sinfonie

Kalifornische Sinfonie

Gwen Bristow

After marrying a merchant, young Garnet leaves New York and embarks on a perilous journey along the Jubilee Trail to California. Through tragedy, struggle, and new love, she builds a life in the wilderness.

"Kalifornische Sinfonie" (originally titled Jubilee Trail) is one of Gwen Bristow's most popular historical novels, set in the 1840s – the period immediately before the great California Gold Rush. The plot follows Garnet Cameron, a well-educated and sheltered girl from New York high society, who marries the charming merchant Oliver Hale and sets off with him on a arduous and extremely dangerous journey along the Jubilee Trail trade route to what was then still Mexican California.

The long and exhausting journey through deserts and wilderness completely changes Garnet – from a spoiled city girl she grows into a brave and independent woman. Along the way, she befriends Flora, a mysterious and defiant saloon singer. When, upon arriving in California, Garnet is struck by great personal tragedy and betrayal, she is left alone in a strange and harsh land. However, with the help of new friends and her own steely will, Garnet manages to start a new job and find true love in the midst of dramatic political and social turmoil.

Gwen Bristow delivers a remarkably vivid and historically accurate account of the early pioneer days in California in this novel. The novel celebrates female strength, friendship, and the unwavering pioneer spirit amidst the beautiful yet rugged landscapes of the American West.
