Henry Miller, the American prose rebel and father of the sexual revolution, in the twilight of his life, partially paralyzed and one-eyed, finds an unexpected muse in his neighbor Brenda Venus, a young dancer and actress sixty years his junior. From 1976 to 1980, their relationship blossoms through over 1,500 love letters, posthumously published in 1986 as My Dear Brenda—an intimate, tender diary that reveals Miller’s vulnerability behind the mask of genius.

Each letter begins with a warm “My Dear Brenda,” interspersed with her responses, wise advice on life, love, and literature, lists of recommended books, original watercolors, and invitations to confessional lunches and dinners. Platonic, intellectual, and emotional, this correspondence celebrates small joys—from the fear of death to the bliss of “seventh heaven”—as Miller shares remorse, joy, and the outsmarting of illness. Brenda becomes his fountain of youth, a mentor in reversed roles, and the letters celebrate serenity over happiness, vanity, and hunger for attention.

The book ends with his death, leaving a legacy of gentle rebellion against oblivion, where the idealization of a woman in old age prevails over all, reminding us that love can be wisdom through words and humor in the face of death.
