Martin Mystere SD #1: Sotonin ekran
An image-processing invention becomes a weapon for blackmailing television networks. Martin Mystère enters a case where viewers can no longer trust what they see.
In Sotonin ekran, computer specialist Dennis Vailant develops a device capable of manipulating images. Initially used to produce unauthorised films for selected customers of a New York video club, the invention attracts two criminals. They kidnap its creator and force him to fabricate television programmes to blackmail major networks.
An image can no longer be trusted as evidence of reality. Martin Mystère becomes involved as an intermediary delivering the ransom money. He enters a case in which technical expertise allows criminals to control what others believe they have witnessed. Their power lies not simply in threats, but in the ability to make a falsehood look convincing.
Claudio Chiaverotti combines a science-fiction premise with a crime thriller about blackmail and media influence. The manipulation of video evidence gives the story an additional resonance today, inviting comparisons with digital fabrication and the problem of trusting recorded images. Enrico Bagnoli illustrates this technological adventure of the Detective of the Impossible. This is the opening issue of Slobodna Dalmacija’s series; the story continues in Elektronska pogodba.
