Graham Greene

Graham Greene's The Tenth Man is a war novel about a wealthy lawyer who tries to escape death during the Nazi occupation. The work explores guilt, identity, redemption, and moral choices.

The Tenth Man is a novella by the English writer Graham Greene set in France during World War II. The work deals with moral dilemmas, human selfishness, guilt, and the possibility of redemption. Although the plot is relatively simple, Greene raises complex questions about human nature and the value of life in extreme circumstances through the fate of the main character.

The main character Jean-Louis Chavel is a wealthy and successful lawyer who ends up in prison during the Nazi occupation along with other hostages. When the German authorities decide to execute ten prisoners in retaliation for the activities of the resistance movement, Chavel faces his own fear of death. In order to save his life, he offers his great wealth to another prisoner who agrees to die in his place. In this way, Chavel avoids execution, but his decision becomes the source of a deep inner crisis.

After the war, he tries to start a new life, but guilt and the consequences of his decision constantly haunt him. He returns under a false identity and encounters people connected to the man who died in his place. Through these encounters, he is forced to confront his own past and the moral responsibility for his actions.

The novel explores the question of whether a person can free himself from the burden of guilt and earn forgiveness. Greene shows how decisions made in moments of fear can shape a whole life and how a person's true worth is not measured by wealth or social standing, but by the ability to take responsibility for his own actions.

In his characteristically simple yet profound style, the author creates a powerful psychological story about conscience, temptation, and the possibility of moral renewal. The Tenth Man is a compelling work that explores the limits of human weakness and the power of personal redemption.
