Honore de Balzac
Honoré de Balzac (1799.–1850.) jedan je od najvažnijih francuskih realističnih pisaca. Rođen u Toursu, studirao je pravo, no ubrzo se posvetio književnosti. Njegovo monumentalno djelo Ljudska komedija (La Comédie humaine) obuhvaća više od 90 romana i pripovijesti, u kojima je realistično prikazao francusko društvo 19. stoljeća.
Balzac je poznat po iznimnoj analitičnosti, detaljnim opisima i psihološkoj dubini likova. Među njegovim najpoznatijim romanima su Otac Goriot, Evgenija Grandet, Izgubljene iluzije i Sjaj i bijeda kurtizana. Bio je plodan pisac, opsjednut radom, često pišući noću uz velike količine kave.
Unatoč financijskim problemima i iscrpljujućem načinu života, ostavio je neizbrisiv trag u svjetskoj književnosti. Njegova djela nadahnula su mnoge autore, uključujući Flauberta, Zolu i Dickensa. Preminuo je u Parizu 1850. godine, ostavljajući iza sebe opus koji ostaje temelj realističkog romana.
