Humboldt's Gift is a meditation on the value of artistic integrity in a world obsessed with money and fame.
The novel follows Charlie Citrine, a successful but emotionally and spiritually lost middle-aged writer and intellectual, as he struggles with the memories of his friend and mentor, Von Humboldt Fleischer, a brilliant but tragically failed poet. Humboldt, inspired by the real-life American poet Delmore Schwartz, represents the archetype of the genius who faces failure in a materialistic world. Their relationship explores themes of friendship, art, fame, and the conflict between intellectual ideals and commercial realities.
