Kritike i prikazi

Milan Begović

A collection of literary, theater, and art criticism by Milan Begović. It contains his reviews of performances at the Croatian National Theater, essays on drama, literature, and art, written with elegance and wit.

This is a comprehensive collection of Begović's critical works from the interwar period and during World War II.

The book is divided into two main thematic sections:

  • On the Theatre — the largest and most important section, in which Begović systematically monitors and evaluates the performances of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. He writes about drama, opera and ballet performances, analyzing acting, directing, dramaturgy and performing arts in general.
  • Literary and artistic reviews — essays, studies and criticisms of literary works, writers and broader cultural themes.

Begović's criticisms are characterized by a high culture of expression, broad European education, fine irony and elegant style. As an experienced playwright and theatre scholar, he is particularly astute when writing about theatre — he values professionalism, stylistic refinement and artistic persuasiveness, and criticizes amateurism, pretentiousness and ideological influences.

The collection represents an important cross-section of Begović's critical work and testifies to his role as one of the leading Croatian theatre critics of the first half of the 20th century. It was published during the turbulent period of the NDH, which gives it additional historical context.

Today, Critics and Reviews is valued as a valuable document on Croatian theatre life between the two wars and during the war, and as an example of refined, aesthetically oriented criticism. It is a rare antiquarian edition.
