Pierre Mauriac

A spiritual novel about a woman who is separating from her husband, dealing with the consequences of divorce, and searching for meaning through faith, suffering, and a Christian understanding of marriage and family.

Divorced is a Catholic spiritual novel by French writer Pierre Mauriac (1882–1963), a physician and deeply religious author, younger brother of Nobel laureate François Mauriac. The book deals with the difficult subject of divorce from a Christian perspective – the inner drama of a woman divorcing her husband, her emotional suffering, feelings of guilt, loneliness and spiritual search for peace and meaning.

Through the story of the main character, the author reflects deeply on the sanctity of marriage, the wounds that divorce leaves on the soul, raising children in a broken family and the possibility of redemption and returning to God despite the fall. The novel is not judgmental, but compassionate and pastoral – it shows how a person in a marriage crisis can find a path to deep faith and inner healing.

This translation by Don Ivo Bonacci is the first translation into Croatian. The work was then published in Yugoslavia in 1976 by the Council for the Family of the Bishops' Conference, which clearly demonstrates its purpose: to be a help and spiritual support for Catholics in matters of marriage and family in an increasingly secular society.

Separated is a classic example of 20th-century Catholic literature – a peaceful, introspective and pastorally oriented novel that can still inspire reflection on marriage, love and fidelity today.

Ovo je jedno od značajnih djela, odražavajući njezin angažman u društvenim temama i razvoj književnog stila, koji se postupno udaljavao od shematske socijalne proze prema modernijoj narativnoj strukturi.
