The action begins in Ireland in 1795, and the main part takes place in Louisiana and New Orleans in the first half of the 19th century. With his audacity, luck at cards and ruthless ambition, he conquers the Harrow plantation, enters the highest social circles and marries the shrewd and proud Creole Odalie D'Arceneaux.
Yerby masterfully evokes the colorful world of the antebellum South: the opulence of the plantations, casinos and saloons of New Orleans, the Mississippi River, the slave society, passions, jealousy, adultery and family tragedies that span generations. Stephen is a typical self-made man – a player who risks everything and often wins, but pays a high price.
The novel is often compared to Gone with the Wind for its epic sweep, love dramas and vivid depiction of the American South.
