Yerby masterfully evokes the colorful world of the antebellum South: the opulence of the plantations, casinos and saloons of New Orleans, the Mississippi River, the slave society, passions, jealousy, adultery and family tragedies that span generations. Stephen is a typical self-made man – a player who risks everything and often wins, but pays a high price.
The novel is often compared to Gone with the Wind for its epic sweep, love dramas and vivid depiction of the American South.
