Jerome David Salinger

"The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger is a cult novel about growing up, teenage rebellion and loneliness. It follows Holden Caulfield in his search for authenticity and protecting a child's innocence from the adult world.

The novel "The Catcher in the Rye" (originally The Catcher in the Rye), by the American writer J.D. Salinger, published in 1951, is one of the most influential and widely read works of world literature of the 20th century. The story follows sixteen-year-old Holden Caulfield after he is expelled from the private school Pencey Prep. Instead of immediately returning home and facing his parents, Holden spends several days wandering the streets of New York, going through a deep emotional and existential crisis. Through a characteristic, direct and colloquial first-person narrative style, Holden delivers a sharp critique of society, condemning the hypocrisy, superficiality and "fakeness" of the adult world. His inner turmoil was further deepened by the trauma of the death of his younger brother Allie. The novel's central metaphor—and the source of its title—stems from Holden's desire to be the "catcher in the rye": someone who stands on the edge of a precipice and catches young children as they play in a field, saving them from falling, symbolizing his desperate desire to protect childhood innocence from the inevitable entrance into adulthood. Salinger's novel remains a timeless study of alienation, mental health, grief, and the challenges of growing up, prompting generations of readers to question their own identity and place in the world.
