The main character is Hanako, a young Japanese woman educated at an American university, who returns to a devastated Tokyo after the war.
The main character meets Lynn, an American soldier in the occupation forces, in Tokyo. Their love quickly develops, even though they come from completely different worlds.
Their relationship provokes opposition from both sides: Hanako's family rejects her decision because they are against marrying an American, while Lynn's American environment (including his mother) despises the idea of marrying a Japanese woman. The love between the two faces a series of racial, cultural and political obstacles, and the novel explores whether their relationship will survive in a world that is not yet ready to accept such a union.
Buck subtly depicts not only the post-war trauma, but also the deep-rooted prejudices and misunderstandings between East and West. Hanako and Lynn's love story thus becomes a symbol of the universal struggle between personal freedom and societal expectations.
