Polagana smrt Luciane B.

Guillermo Martínez

Luciana B., a former assistant to the famous writer Kloster, believes that Kloster is methodically taking revenge on her. She seeks help from a lesser-known writer; two conflicting versions of events lead to a tense game of truth and revenge.

The Slow Death of Luciana B. (2007) is a sophisticated psychological thriller with elements of horror and literary play. Luciana B., a former assistant to the famous writer Kloster, after decades of tragic deaths of those closest to her, believes that Kloster is methodically taking revenge on her. She seeks help from a lesser-known writer; two conflicting versions of events lead to a tense game of truth and revenge.

The story is narrated by a lesser-known writer who ten years ago met Luciana B., a young, beautiful and cheerful girl who works as a secretary and dictaphone for the famous, mysterious writer Kloster. After an incident, the relationship breaks off, and Luciana disappears from his life. Ten years later, changed, balding and afraid, she comes to the writer-narrator: she claims that Kloster, after a series of "accidental" deaths (parents, friends, loved ones), systematically destroyed her life out of revenge.

In parallel, we hear Kloster's version: he is the victim – Luciana tried to destroy his marriage and career, and the tragedies (the death of a child, the divorce) worked in her favor. The narrator is caught between two stories, trying to discern the truth, while new events (deaths, threats) pile up and point to Kloster's guilt – or maybe not.

Martínez masterfully builds tension through opposing perspectives, doubts about the narrator's reliability, literary references and an atmosphere of paranoia. The novel is not a classic crime novel with a clear solution, but an introspective game of revenge, madness and power in the world of writers. The style is elegant, precise, with mathematical logic (the author is a mathematician) – perfect for those who like Borges' labyrinths in modern packaging.
