Središnja je tema romana prikaz unutarnjeg života gospođe Ramsay koja pokušava uspostaviti, poništavajući sebe, odnose u obitelji. U političkom smislu, roman obilježava isticanje prava na slobodu čovjeka, u psihološkom ulogu podsvijesti, a u stilskome, to je roman toka struje svijesti.

Od samog naslova pa do posljednjih stranica knjige sam svjetionik je u središtu. On je tu i predmet i znak i simbol. Kao predmet dio je pripovjedne potke, kao znak on je temeljni oslonac likovne predodžbe, što je naporedna i istodobna s cijelom radnjom, a kao simbol (nadrastajući polazni pripovjedni ili paralelni slikovni plan, i povezavši ne toliko more i nebo koliko ono što oni mogu značiti) otkriva se — u složenom uradku svih prisjećaja i primišljaja — kao nosilac svjetlosti i ljepote, smisla i spoznaje: tajanstvenog života na zagonetnoj podlozi tmine i smrti.
