Radnja se odvija u Njemačkoj ubrzo nakon prijelaza stoljeća. Lisa Wegner odrasta zaštićeno na seoskom imanju, daleko od uzbudljivog života velikih gradova. Već kao mlada djevojka buni se protiv krutih konzervativnih normi i moralnih očekivanja obitelji. Sanja o tome da postane umjetnica i odlazi u München.

U prijestolnici Bavarske ulazi u živopisnu, intelektualnu i boemsku scenu Schwabinga – svijet umjetnika, filozofa, slobodnih ljubavi i društvenih eksperimenata. Tamo doživljava uspone i padove, seksualnu i emocionalnu ovisnost, gubitke i potragu za vlastitim identitetom.

Seitz piše idealistički, filozofski i istodobno vrlo tjelesno i strastveno. Roman istražuje teme ženske emancipacije, umjetničkog poziva, usamljenosti i cijene slobode. Autorica ne idealizira boemski život, već ga prikazuje s dramatičnošću i realističnim detaljima.

Djelo je karakteristično za njezin kasniji opus: fokus na snažne ženske likove, emocionalne ovisnosti, samotraženje i napetost između tradicije i moderne. Emotivan i promišljen povijesni roman o ženi koja traži svoje mjesto u svijetu koji se mijenja.
