Charles Dickens

Great Expectations is one of the most widely read and beloved novels by Charles Dickens, who is considered the most prominent English storyteller of the 19th century, or the era of realism. Great Expectations is one of his last works.

Pip, a pauper raised in the humble home of blacksmith Joe Gargery, meets the fugitive Magwitch on the moors and helps him, unaware of the consequences. The mysterious benefactor later finances Pip's rise to gentlemanhood, which introduces him to London's high society. Pip believes his patroness is the eccentric Miss Havisham, and falls in love with her adopted daughter Estella, a cold and unapproachable girl raised to break hearts. Pip's obsession with status and love for Estella leads him to become estranged from Joe and his roots.

As the story progresses, Pip discovers that his benefactor is actually Magwitch, not Miss Havisham. This realization shatters his expectations, forcing him to reexamine his values. Magwitch, pursued by the law, risks his life to see Pip, who gradually develops a respect for him. The novel culminates in dramatic events: Magwitch is captured, Miss Havisham dies in a fire, and Pip faces losses and debts. In the end, mature and humbler, Pip reconciles with Joe and meets Estella, who has also been changed by life's hardships.

Dickens masterfully weaves social criticism, complex characters, and a tense plot, exploring class differences, morality, and personal development. The novel ends on an ambivalent note, leaving the reader to ponder Pip's fate.

Godan

Munshi Prem Chand

Godan (1936.) majstorski prikazuje patnje indijskih seljaka u kolonijalnoj eri. To nije samo priča o porazu, već i himna seljacima, kritika kaste i kolonijalne pohlepe. U Horijevim očima vidimo Indiju koja se bude – polako, ali nezaustavljivo.
