In impoverished Dublin after the Civil War, a man who betrays a comrade for money becomes a prisoner of his own guilt and a target of revolutionary revenge.
In 1920s Dublin, Gypo Nolan, an impoverished former member of a revolutionary organisation, betrays his friend Frankie McPhillip to the police for twenty pounds. The reward promises temporary relief from destitution, but sets in motion a series of increasingly dangerous choices. As his former comrades search for the informer, Gypo wanders the city, driven by fear, drink and a desperate desire for acceptance.
The Informer is a social and psychological novel with elements of a political thriller. Behind its personal tragedy lies a society where revolutionary conflict and civil war have failed to eliminate hunger, unemployment and exclusion. An underground organisation with communist revolutionary aims demands absolute loyalty and punishes betrayal with death.
O’Flaherty brings together social deprivation, political discipline and individual responsibility, offering neither an easy excuse nor a simple condemnation of his protagonist. Suspense grows from the pursuit, but above all from Gypo’s inability to confront his own actions. The result is an unsettling exploration of conscience, human weakness and the possibility of forgiveness.
