Djelo se bavi analizom glavnih predstavnika i ideja egzistencijalizma, ali iz perspektive dijalektičkog materijalizma, tj. marksističke filozofske pozicije.

Ziherl piše ovu knjigu s namjerom da objasni što je egzistencijalizam, ali i da opovrgne njegove osnovne postavke iz perspektive marksističke filozofije. On egzistencijalizam vidi kao ideološki izraz krize buržoaskog društva, posebno nakon Drugog svjetskog rata. Knjiga je pisana za širu intelektualnu publiku, osobito studentima, političkim radnicima i kulturnim djelatnicima u tadašnjoj Jugoslaviji, u sklopu ideološkog obrazovanja i usmjeravanja filozofske misli u društveno prihvatljivim okvirima.
