Taras Buljba

Taras Buljba

Nikolaj Vasiljevič Gogolj

Taras Bulba is a short historical novel by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol from the Mirgorod cycle. The plot of the novel concerns the history of the Zaporozhian Cossacks.

It is not possible to connect the plot of the novel with concrete historical events. The main character is Taras Buljba, an old Cossack, who, with his sons Andrija and Ostap, sets out to fight against the Polish nobility and defend Orthodoxy. This work by Nikolai Gogol is written in a classical manner; the characters are not caricatured as was Gogol's way. Conceptually, Taras Buljba is a work in the style of romantic national revival. In it, Gogol presented the concept of the "Russian soul". The work is rich in adventures and depictions of battles, as well as Gogol's characteristic humor. The following works were also published in the book: Vij, Nos and Kabanica.

„Die toten Seelen“ (1842) ist eine brillante Satire, die den moralischen und sozialen Verfall des zaristischen Russlands durch Tschitschikows Betrug mit toten Leibeigenen aufdeckt, mit Gogols virtuoser Mischung aus Humor, Ironie und Lyrik.
