Za roman Kako je kasno bilo, kako kasno Jamesa Kelmana (1946.) Janja Ciglar Žanić u Leksikonu stranih pisaca napisala je da je riječ o djelu osebujnih becketovskih manira.

Beskompromisno ispisan i po mnogo čemu eksperimentalan, roman "Kako je kasno bilo, kako kasno", koji mnogo toga duguje modernističkoj tradiciji romana, ponajprije kafkijanskoj i orvelijanskoj, pokazuje zašto je james Kelman (rođen 1946.) sasvim sigurno jedan od najznačajnijih suvremenih škotskih romanpisaca. Godine 1995. ovaj roman nagrađen je prestižnom Bookerovom, nagradom, kojeg hrvatski čitatelji odsada mogu čitati u izdanju VBZ-a i vrsnom prijevodu Selme Dimitrijević.
