Vježbanje života
The novel is set in the 19th and 20th centuries and follows key historical moments in Rijeka, a city that has been a scene of conflict between various cultures, languages, and political interests throughout history.
"Vježbanje života", a novel by Nedjeljko Fabrio, published in 1985, is one of the most important works of contemporary Croatian literature. This historical novel deals with the centuries-old conflicts, strata and identities of the city of Rijeka (Fiume), which symbolizes the fate of the Croatian people in a broader historical and social context.
The novel deals with the lives of three families:
The Croatian family: Represents Croatian identity and the struggle to preserve the national language and culture. The Italian family: Embody Italian cultural influence and often hostile attitude towards Croats. The Jewish family: Symbolizes a minority community and the universal human aspiration for survival in difficult historical conditions. Through the fates of these families, Fabrio explores social, political and cultural relations within Rijeka, which was often divided between different governments and ideologies (Austro-Hungarian Empire, Italy, Kingdom of Yugoslavia, fascism).
