Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić's classic follows the good little apprentice Hlapić as he flees from the cruel master Roko. On his seven-day journey with the girl Gita, he performs good deeds and overcomes numerous obstacles.

The Strange Adventures of Apprentice Hlapić (1913) is the first Croatian children's novel and one of the most important works by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić. This timeless story follows the small, bright and exceptionally good-natured shoemaker's apprentice Hlapić, who, after an unjust punishment and cruelty from master Roko, decides to conquer the world in order to "smash" the little boots and prove his worth.

Hlapić's seven-day journey is filled with exciting adventures, unforeseen dangers and unforgettable encounters. Along the way, he is joined by his faithful dog Bundaš and a girl Gita, a mysterious circus rider. Together they overcome various obstacles, help the poor and needy people they meet, and bravely confront the dark figure of the Black Man. Through an exciting plot, the story gradually reveals Gita's origins and leads to a happy ending in which kindness, honesty and friendship are rewarded in many ways.

Written in an accessible, warm and dynamic style, the story carries a strong moral message about the importance of humanity, solidarity and optimism. The novel has seen numerous editions, has been translated into dozens of world languages and has been adapted into a cult animated film, remaining an indispensable part of the upbringing of generations of readers.
