Bruno Traven

A novel that presents a raw and realistic depiction of the lives of the poorer classes of Mexican society in the first half of the 20th century. The cart is not just a physical burden – it symbolizes the hardships of the lives of the poor classes that soc

The main character, Macario, a humble peasant and colporteur (cart driver), leads a difficult life transporting goods and people through rural areas. His cart symbolizes not only his means of survival, but also his complete subordination to a socio-economic system that favors the rich and powerful.

Through the narrative, Traven criticizes social injustice, corruption, and exploitation of the poor. Macario goes through various hardships – from low wages, exhausting work, to humiliation by the authorities and the church. Despite everything, he remains an honest and hard-working man, which further emphasizes the contrast between him and the unscrupulous elites.

The novel is characterized by Traven's characteristic style: simple language, sharp realism, and a strong social message. The work is at once an indictment of an inhumane system and a dedication to the dignity of the common man.
