Udubokoj tišini, pustom širokom ulicom uspinjala su se povrćarska kola prema Parizu; kotači su ritmički drndali i njihova je jeka udarala o pročelja kuća koje su pozaspale s obje strane iza nejasnih linija brijestova.

Na mostu Neuillv pridružile su se taljige kupusa i taljige graška osmorim kolima repe i mrkve, što su dolazila iz Nanterra; konji su išli sami, oborene glave, izdržljivim i tromim hodom koji je uzbrdica još usporavala. Gore, na tovaru povrća, vozači su drijemali s uzdama u šakama, ispruživši se potrbuške, pokriti crno i sivo ispruganim kabanicama. Na izlasku iz tame osvijetlila bi plinska svjetiljka čavle cipela, modri rukav bluze, vrh kape, što se nazirala među golemim crvenim svežnjevima mrkve, bijelim svežnjevima repe, bujnim zelenilom graška i kupusa. I na susjednim cestama najavljivao je udaljeni štropot kola slične prijevoze; čitav metež koji je u dva sata izjutra presijecao tminu i tvrdi san te uljuljkivao crni grad štropoćući namirnicama pri prolazu.
