Jules Verne's 1865 Voyage Around the Moon follows a group of American Civil War veterans led by eccentric gunsmith Impey Barbicane.

Their ambitious project is to build a giant cannon and launch a missile to the moon. The book explores the themes of scientific innovation, adventure and human curiosity.

It is interesting how Verne's vision of space travel was ahead of its time.
