Buktinje oceana

Buktinje oceana

Radovan Kovačević

A documentary portraying the fate of the Yugoslav merchant navy during World War II. Through the fates of ships such as the "Durmitor", "Njegoš" and "Velebit", the author presents the personal stories of sailors, bringing history to life and paying tribut

The book details the contribution of Yugoslav sailors to the Allied forces, highlighting the courage and sacrifice of more than 1,500 sailors who participated in convoys of 50 ships. Each of the 84 larger ships in Allied service had numerous independent voyages, often more dangerous than those in convoys.

Losses were significant: 56 large Yugoslav steamers were sunk, 37 of which were torpedoed, 4 were hit by mines, 2 were destroyed by air attacks, 3 were lost during the invasion of Normandy, and one was sunk by a pirate ship. In total, about 400 sailors died or went missing on Yugoslav and foreign ships.

The book is richly illustrated and provides a deep insight into the maritime history of Yugoslavia during this turbulent period.
