Milutin Mayer

Milutin Mayer's novel The Last of His Kind is a sequel to the historical novel The Bloody Council of Križevci, in which the author depicts tragic events from Croatian history at the end of the 14th and beginning of the 15th centuries.

The plot focuses on the aftermath of the Council of Križevci in 1397, where Croatian nobles, led by Stjepan Lacković, were treacherously executed on the orders of King Sigismund (Žigmund).

In this novel, Mayer describes in detail the further feudal struggles of the Croatian nobles against King Sigismund, with the support of the Bosnian nobleman Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić. Through characters and events, the author depicts complex political intrigues, betrayals, and the struggle to preserve Croatian autonomy within the then Hungarian-Croatian Kingdom.

Mayer's writing style is characterized by rich language and detailed descriptions of historical events, bringing the reader closer to the atmosphere of medieval Croatia. The novel is a significant contribution to Croatian historical prose, providing insight into the key moments of the struggle for national independence.
