Cvijeće i ukrasno bilje

Stjepan Gotvald

The book represents one of the first comprehensive domestic works dedicated to horticulture and the cultivation of ornamental plants, written at a time when a systematic approach to the arrangement of gardens, parks and homesteads in Croatia was just bein

The book combines expert knowledge and practical instructions, written in an accessible style, with the aim of serving both experts and amateurs.

Given the time of publication, Gotvld uses the botanical names and classifications of the time, and the work is characterized by an emphasized pedagogical purpose – to teach the reader the basics of growing, caring for and selecting plants for various purposes. It covers annual, biennial and perennial flowering plants, as well as shrubs, climbers, bulbous plants and potted plants, with special emphasis on the climatic conditions of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the adaptation of species to local conditions.

Gotvld also offers advice on seasonal work, planning flower beds, sowing, transplanting and protecting plants, along with practical notes for arranging gardens in urban and rural areas. At the same time, the book reflects the spirit of the times – emphasizing harmony with nature, simplicity and functional beauty, while taking care of the economy and availability of plant material.

As a publication from 1940, "Flowers and Ornamental Plants" also has historical value - it shows the early steps of Croatian horticultural education and the popularization of gardening, and remains a valuable document of the enthusiasm and knowledge of a time that found in plants a source of beauty, peace, and cultural expression.
