Novi katekizam: Poruka vjere za odrasle

The New Catechism is a classic of Croatian Catholic literature after the Council – a book that does not offer ready-made answers, but rather invites us to a journey of faith, to an encounter with the living God in our everyday lives. Ideal for those who w

In the period after the Second Vatican Council, when the Church was looking for fresh, accessible ways to transmit the faith, Kršćanska sadašnjost published the New Catechism – a teaching of the faith intended for adults. This book is not the official universal Catechism of the Catholic Church (the one of John Paul II from 1992/1994), but a courageous, contemporary attempt to present the Catholic faith to modern man – without fear of open questions, with an emphasis on dialogue, personal experience and the topicality of the Gospel message.

The book is structured classically, but with a new spirit: it starts from man’s search for meaning, goes through the revelation of God in history, gives central place to Jesus Christ, then deals with the Church, the sacraments, the moral life and prayer. It is especially interesting because it does not shy away from difficult topics – evolution, secularization, sexuality, social justice, suffering, faith in the modern world. Instead of dry definitions, he often uses biblical language, contemporary examples and invites the reader to personal reflection.

Main themes:

  • Man and his search for God - faith as an answer to deep life questions
  • Revelation and Holy Scripture - the living word of God in the Old and New Testaments
  • Jesus Christ - the center of faith, the incarnate love of God
  • The Church - the community of believers, the sacraments as encounters with God
  • Morality and life according to the Gospel - the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, conscience, the social dimension of faith
  • Prayer and eschatology - Our Father, hope in eternal life

The style is warm, open, sometimes provocative - it wants to awaken faith in those who may be disappointed by formalism or distanced from the Church. Due to its "progressive" approach (in the spirit of the 1960s/1970s) it has also caused controversy, but has remained important for many who have sought a faith that breathes with modern man.
