The plot is set in Senj and its hinterland, under the legendary Nehaj fortress. Novak faithfully depicts the everyday life of Senj citizens, patrician families in decline, the poor population, and the impact of new social and economic changes after the Austro-Hungarian period. The novel follows several characters through their personal dramas, loves, conflicts, and struggles for survival, emphasizing the influence of the environment on the fates of individuals.
As in Novak's other works, the central theme is the fate of the "little man" in difficult social circumstances - poverty, alcoholism, moral decline, but also nobility, love, and resistance. The writer paints the contrasts between the romantic past of the Senj region and the harsh reality of the 19th century with deep understanding and compassion.
With a style rich in detailed descriptions of the landscape (bora, sea, mountain villages), lively dialogues, and psychological portraits, Novak creates a convincingly realistic picture.
