Osnovno moralno bogoslovlje

Andrija Živković

The first volume of a comprehensive textbook of Catholic moral theology. A systematic presentation of the fundamental principles of moral theology by a Croatian theologian. To be followed by volume 2 (Christian Virtues, 1942) and volume 3 (God's and Churc

Dr. Andrija Živković (1886–1960) was a prominent Croatian Catholic theologian, priest of the Đakovo diocese, long-time full professor of moral theology at the Faculty of Theology in Zagreb, and one of the most important Croatian moral theologians of the 20th century. He studied in Austria and Germany, received his doctorate in theology, and from 1925 he taught at the Faculty of Theology in Zagreb.

The book is a classic systematic textbook written in the Thomistic and Scholastic tradition, adapted to the needs of Croatian theologians and priests. In it, the author defines moral theology, discusses its basic concepts (moral act, conscience, law, sin, virtue, grace, etc.), and lays solid philosophical and theological foundations for the entire moral theology.

The work is written in a clear, scientific style, with numerous quotations from Holy Scripture, the Church Fathers, Thomas Aquinas, and contemporary theologians. It is intended primarily for students of theology, priests and professors, but is also useful for more serious laypeople interested in a deeper understanding of Christian ethics.

This edition represents the pinnacle of Croatian Catholic theological production in the interwar period. Today it is a rare antiquarian publication, and the entire trilogy is considered an important part of Croatian theological heritage. Živković's approach was traditional, but open to contemporary issues, which makes it interesting for contemporary studies of moral theology.
