Četvrta čitanka za niže pučke škole u Hrvatskoj i Slavoniji
"The Fourth Textbook for Lower Elementary Schools in Croatia and Slavonia" is a school textbook from 1924 that develops students' reading, linguistic, and moral values through literary, educational, and patriotic texts.
"The Fourth Textbook for Lower Elementary Schools in Croatia and Slavonia", edited by Dr. Sigismund Čajkovac, is an antiquarian school textbook published in Zagreb in 1924. It is intended for students in the upper grades of lower elementary schools and is part of a series of textbooks that were used in Croatian primary education during the interwar period.
The book contains literary, educational, historical, geographical and patriotic texts adapted to children's age. Its purpose was not only to develop reading skills but also to shape the moral, cultural and national values of students. In addition to literary excerpts and poems, the textbook provides content that introduces students to nature, everyday life, history and society of the time.
Čajkovac, a prominent Croatian pedagogue and school reformer, sought to connect the educational and upbringing function of teaching in his textbooks. The texts were selected in such a way that they develop understanding of what was read, linguistic culture and a sense of belonging to the community. The editions of that period also include texts printed in Latin and Cyrillic, which reflects the educational and linguistic conditions in the Kingdom of SHS at the time.
As an antiquarian textbook, the "Fourth Textbook" today has important cultural and historical value because it testifies to the education system, teaching methods and educational ideals of Croatia in the first half of the 20th century. The work is also a valuable source for studying the development of Croatian pedagogy and school curricula of that time.
