The Black Dahlia (1987) by James Ellroy is a crime novel inspired by the real-life, unsolved murder of Elizabeth Short in 1947 in Los Angeles. The work is the first in Ellroy's L.A. Quartet, known for its inspiring depiction of the city and complex plots.
The plot follows two police officers, Bucky Bleichert and Lee Blanchard, former boxers and friends, who investigate the gruesome murder of a young woman, nicknamed the Black Dahlia for her style and media sensation. Bucky and Lee, in love with the same woman, Kay Lake, become obsessed with the case. Lee's behavior becomes increasingly unstable, and revelations about his past and connections to criminals deepen the drama.
