Trg Lava Mirskog (2001) is the prose debut of Nenad Rizvanović—a writer, editor, and journalist from Osijek—through which the author successfully established himself within contemporary Croatian literature. Named after an actual square in Osijek, this collection of short stories functions as a kind of intimate urban guide and a sentimental tribute to the city, its geography, its micro-worlds, and the specific mentality of the Slavonian province. The stories in the collection are linked by a strong autobiographical and generational resonance. With refined wistfulness and subtle humor, Rizvanović chronicles coming-of-age experiences, first loves, friendships, musical and cinematic influences, and the daily rituals of young people in Osijek’s neighborhoods. Through a mosaic of characters—ranging from local eccentrics and dreamers to ordinary families—the author captures the city's atmosphere across a period of transition: from socialist tranquility, through wartime trauma and the post-war shift, to the dawn of the new millennium. His writing style is distinguished by an exceptional eye for detail, a strong sense of atmosphere, immediacy, and sentences that are stylistically understated yet rich in meaning. Trg Lava Mirskog eschews grand historical narratives, focusing instead on the marginal, seemingly trivial moments that shape the totality of a life and a city. Thanks to its authenticity and mature narrative voice, the book is regarded as one of the finest examples of the Croatian urban short story from the early 21st century.
