Poljska raskršća
A work of political commentary and analysis concerning the turbulent social and political upheavals in Poland in the early 1980s, the rise of the Solidarity trade union, and the pivotal historical decisions that shook the Eastern Bloc.
"Polish Crossroads" (Poljska raskršća) is a study combining journalism and political analysis by the prominent Yugoslav journalist and editor Dragoljub Milivojević, published in 1980 by NIN/Politika (as part of the "Ninove sveske: savremena publicistika" series). The book offers an authentic, firsthand account of one of the most dramatic periods in recent European and Polish history—the transition from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. During this time, Poland found itself at a historical and political crossroads: a deep economic crisis, worker discontent, and the emergence of the independent trade union Solidarity (led by Lech Wałęsa) fundamentally shook the communist regime and destabilized the Eastern Bloc. The author analyzes the causes of the social crisis, the role of the Catholic Church, the reactions of the Soviet Union, and the complex dynamics within the Polish leadership. Through the keen analytical lens of an experienced foreign affairs correspondent, Milivojević portrays Poland at a moment of high tension, seeking its own path amidst internal reforms and external pressures. The work stands as a valuable historical document regarding the collapse of a system in the making.
