The foundational text of Taoism, the authorship of which is attributed to Lao-Tzu. Through concise and poetic insightful writings, he teaches about the Tao (Way), natural harmonious living, non-violence and the wisdom of action by non-action (Wu wei).
The Tao Te Ching (The Book of the Way and Virtue), attributed to the mystical Chinese sage Laozi (6th century BCE), is one of the most influential and widely translated philosophical-spiritual works in human history. It consists of 81 short, often enigmatic, and poetically crafted chapters divided into two parts: the first deals with the concept of the Tao (the Absolute Way or the primordial principle from which all things originate), while the second focuses on Te (Virtue—the power and manifestation of that Way in everyday life). The work's central theme is living in complete harmony with nature and the cosmic order. Laozi advocates the concept of Wu wei (action through non-action); this does not signify passivity, but rather acting without the imposition of force, resistance, or the ego—much like water, which is soft and adaptable yet overcomes even the most stubborn obstacles. The text offers profound insights into humility, withdrawing from unnecessary conflicts, simplicity, and wise leadership that governs unobtrusively and without repression. Due to its timeless wisdom and universal approach to human existence, the Tao Te Ching is not only the foundation of Taoism but also an inexhaustible source of inspiration for Western and Eastern philosophy, psychology, and personal spiritual development.
