Jadranka

Jadranka

Marija Jurić Zagorka

Jadranka is a historical novel, set in Zagreb and later in Switzerland. It is set during the Bach era of absolutism in Croatia (1850–1859), in the historical and political context of the absolutist and centralist policies of the Habsburg Monarchy.

The pronounced Germanization, the dissolved Croatian Parliament, the appearance of the gendarmerie as the bearer of a violent regime is a prelude to the banning of the Croatian flag and Croatianism in general. In Jadranka, Zagorka touched on many topics, from class differences and conflicts, to Germanization and the attack of foreigners on the “Croatian treasure”.

The plot naturally incorporates a complicated love story that is happily resolved in the end, as is the basic plot of the novel, while history openly flows on. It is a characteristically complex love story that intuitively reveals to the reader the utopian world of popular romance with a happy ending. Love for the homeland is also one of the main motives and drivers of events in this novel by Zagorka.
