Priče iz Alhambre: Princ hodočasnik ljubavi / Zidareva pustolovina / Bjegunac

Irving Washington

To the traveler filled with a sense of history and poetry, so intertwined in the annals of Romanesque Spain, the Alhambra is as much an object of veneration as the Kaaba or Qaba is to all true Muslims...

How many legends and traditions, true and invented, how many songs and ballads, Arabic and Spanish, about love and war and chivalry are associated with this oriental palace! It was the residence of the Moorish kings who, surrounded by the splendor and beauty of Asian luxury, ruled the earthly paradise, as they boasted, and where they fought for their empire in Spain for the last time. The royal palace is only part of the fortress, whose walls studded with towers extend irregularly, encircling the entire ridge of the hill, an offshoot of the Sierra Nevada or the Snowy Mountains, and offer a view of the city. From the outside, it appears only as a rough cluster of towers and ramparts, devoid of regularity of the ground plan or architectural harmony, not at all betraying the harmony and beauty that reign within it.
