The Reprieve / The Words presents two important works by Jean-Paul Sartre, the French philosopher, writer, and one of the leading figures of existentialism. Although differing in literary form, both works explore human freedom, one's relationship with the past, and responsibility for life choices.
The Reprieve (Le Sursis, 1945) is the second novel in Sartre’s cycle The Roads to Freedom. The action takes place during the Munich Crisis of 1938, when Europe stood on the brink of war. Through the fates of numerous characters—their fears, doubts, and political convictions—Sartre portrays a society facing historical uncertainty. The novel explores the tension between personal freedom and historical circumstances, demonstrating how individual decisions take on new meaning during moments of collective crisis.
The Words (Les Mots, 1964) is an autobiographical work in which Sartre looks back at his childhood, his upbringing among books, and his early attempts at writing. With irony and critical detachment, he examines his family upbringing, literary ambitions, and the notion of the writer as an exceptional figure. The book is divided into two parts, Reading and Writing, and represents a reckoning of sorts with his own literary beginnings.
