Julijana Matanović

Since the first book, the theme of literature has been a constant feature of Julijana Matanović's prose. The author's "reckoning" with previous analyses, as well as with the list of selected reading titles, is clearest precisely in the texts included in t

The book is divided into three parts. The introductory place was secured by the story of a literature student who has been unsuccessfully preparing for the final exam of her studies for years. Her experience of the city, the society in which she moves, her attempts at love and the vicissitudes of passing a key exam round off an independent story with many recognizable places for future younger readers. This is followed by a list of required readings from the central course (study of recent literature). It contains the interventions of the main character and underlined titles that she "processed" for the exam. The third and most important part is the heroine's diary of reading Croatian literature (prose) of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Since the heroine of the novel is not able to separate reality and fiction, her analyzes start from the position of one of the characters from the selected work. The character comments on his current position in literature, admits his jealousy towards some more praised, but in his opinion less worthy colleagues, and often comes out of the book cover and evaluates the phenomena of contemporary Croatian society.

Among the hundreds of characters, the following "offered" their stories: Tena (J. Kozarac), Branka (A. Šenoa), Melita (J. E. Tomić), Breza (S. Kolar), Đuka (I. Kozarac), Cvijeta (L. Paljetak). , Štefica Cvek (D. Ugrešić), Hlapić (I. B. Mažuranić), Slava (P. Pavličić). Mirjana (M. J. Zagorka), Hasanaginica (I. Horozović), Isprebijana (V. Desnica), Arsen (J. P. Kamov), Rođena (M. Begović), Pero Krneta, Baroness Castelli Glembay (M. Krleža), Jelena - the woman who is not there , Maks Levenfeld, brother Petar, Aska (I. Andrić), Vlado (V. Nazor), lieutenant Milić, illustrissimus Battorych, Ðurđica Agićeva (K. Š. Gjalski), Soldier (J. Truhelka), Lucia (N. Fabrio), Sabina, Julka, Teodora (E. Kumičić), The Lady in the Red Coat (I.
